The usual Friday Market this week will include the official launch of OctoberFeast 2011 and a chance to sample some delicious nibbles and tipples from local producers. Special guests Robin van Creveld (Lewes Community Chef), John Bayley (Cashew Catering) and Dominic McCartan (The Snowdrop Inn) will be demonstrating their techniques and injecting a lively vibe into the proceedings, plus musical accompaniment.

We are also very proud to announce that Lewes’ favourite Head Brewer, Miles Jenner from Harveys Brewery will be  hosting the launch …

The Friday Food Market up at the Market Tower has just celebrated its first birthday and locally-grown fruit & veg, cheese, specialty breads, cakes and pastries, fresh and smoked meat bought from this atmospheric place have become fixtures on Lewesians’ shopping lists.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to explore, today would be a good day to do so as it will combine the official OctoberFeast launch at 12 noon, plus demonstrations and nibbles from Lewes Community Chef Robin van Creveld.

Dancing In The Old

Saturday 1st October @ Harveys Yard

Harveys’ annual event to usher in the new season’s beer. Old is a Victorian-style dark winter brew, produced from higher proportions of crystal malt. It was Harveys’ first beer to win a National Award, in 1952, and has won many other accolades since.

Herbal Meander At Charleston

Julia Child is best-known for introducing French cuisine to the American public and was a well-loved television cooking personality. Join Tanya at Laporte’s for a delicious interpretation of one of Julia’s recipes.

Friday 30th September @ Harvey’s Depot

Last year’s sell-out Paddock production of EAT THIS has been expanded to include a second fast-moving comedy from the pen of Lewes director/writer Susannah Waters – one play in two courses!

Many of the original cast return to perform this witty script, which inspired tweets among Lewes residents of their favourite lines, this year joined by Richard Attlee, otherwise heard as Kenton on Radio 4′s The Archers. The evening takes place in Harvey’s Depot on Pinwell Road (opposite Lewes station car park), and once again Paddock Productions will be running a bar with food in the premises.

This show promises to once again be a sell-out, so book early.

Apple Pressing

Last year we pressed 515 litres of delicious, fresh juice from apples and pears that would otherwise have gone to waste in gardens in and around Lewes. This year, the Apple Press returns so that you can celebrate the quality and quantity of your localf ruit again. Bring along your washed fruit to the Press plus clean, plastic containers. We’d also value the names of your apple trees and, if you’re willing to volunteer some time to help with the pressing, that would be welcome too.

Hog Roast at the Buttercup Cafe

This year, on the first Saturday of the October Feast, the Buttercup we will be serving a hog roast supplied by our friendly local butcher, Peter Richards. Roasting starts at 6 in the morning to ensure a deliciously ready hog from mid-day, chewy brown ciabatta will wrap the meat. For vegetarians we will be celebrating with all things apple; savoury, sweet and of course apple inspired refreshments.

Learning from last year we will make a huge bowl of apple sauce, as it is the most delicious and popular accompaniment to all dishes. Our aim this year is to perfect the art of the toffee apple … we have given ourselves a challenge! With the likelihood of variable weather we will be ensuring we have outside cover. Would you like the luxury of a delicious home-cooked meal in the comfort of someone else’s home? Then membership to our Pop-Up Dinner Club is for you … we’re very excited about our special Octoberfeast Pop Up Dinners and are thrilled to be bringing this underground phenomenon to Lewes by hosting a series of OctoberFeast Secret Suppers from Friday 30th September – Saturday 8th October. Lewes is obviously full of keen cooks as we can now list a host of hosts who are ready to put on a dinner party to remember for a table of surprise guests.

You can become a member of the Pop-Up Dinner Club by choosing which menu theme appeals to you most, then pay for your membership online for a fee of £22 per person. Your membership fee covers one meal per person, but if you’re feeling adventurous (or hungry!) we’re offering a special deal of £40 for a Dual Dinner Deal which will allow you to buy two meals per person (contact us here if you’re interested). Unless otherwise stated, the hosts are Lewes-based, and their address will be disclosed to you once you’ve become a member. Your membership card will be given to you on the night when you arrive.

Listed below under ‘More Details’ are the dates and the themes of the dinners – you choose and pay for your dinner and we will then send you the location and time etc.
