Marguerite Patten OBE, the doyenne of food writers has a career that spans over 60 years. Probably the world expert on cooking with spam, Marguerite began broadcasting on the wireless in 1944 when only a quarter of British households owned a fridge, guiding us through rationing and becoming the BBC’s choice as the first postwar TV cookery expert.

In 1991 she was awarded an OBE for ‘services to the art of cookery’ and has been honoured with four Lifetime Achievement Awards. She was a castaway on Desert Island Discs in 2001 and, aged over 90, is still regularly devising new recipes and testing them, usually having at least one book in the preparation stage, and writing for two national magazines as well as being an avid gardener and opera lover.
